Route Map

Highlights

  • Passes the old Thwaite Mills Watermill, and Royal Armouries.
  • Piglove by the River is recommended for refreshments if you're passing there on weekend afternoons.

From Skelton Lake Services head past the lake towards the canal. From there you can follow the canal to your right all the way into Leeds City Centre!

You’ll pass under the M1, and a long stretch up towards the Skelton Grange power station.

Under the M1 motorway

At the power station you’ll head up some steps to the road. Just turn left and back down the steps at the other side and you’ll head under the bridge to the other side of the canal.

Steps

You’ll need to cross over the river at Knostrop Weir, just past the old Thwaite Watermill.

Just along here you’ll pass a sundial, and Rothwell stone circle.

There’s then Knostrop River Footbridge which will take you back across further down, and re-join a path leading all the way up to the Royal Armouries.

Knostrop River Footbridge

Just before you get to the Armouries, Piglove by the river is a great little stop right by the river for a burger and beer! (Opens 1pm at the weekends, but not until 4pm during the week)

If you don’t fancy walking all the way back, on weekdays you can get the bus back to Skelton Lake from Lower Briggate. Alternatively take the train to Woodlesford, and it’s a 2.5km walk back to the estate!
