Heritage Open Days at Middleton Railway
Add to Calendar
Middleton Railway joins the national Heritage Open Days festival with free illustrated talks on its own history, alongside a normal day of passenger trains.
Talks run at 10:00, 12:00, 13:00 and 15:00, last about 25 minutes and are free with no booking needed. Trains leave Moor Road at 10:30, 11:10, 11:50, 12:30, 13:30, 14:10, 14:50 and 15:30 — diesel-hauled on the Saturday, steam-hauled on the Sunday. Tickets are Day Rovers, so you can ride as often as you like. Both days also run Creation Station craft activities. About 15 minutes’ drive from Skelton Gate.
The talks cover why this line matters: Middleton was the site of the world’s first commercially successful steam locomotives, the first railway created by Act of Parliament, and the first standard gauge line to be preserved. You can break the journey at Middleton Park for a walk or a picnic before riding back, and there’s a café at Moor Road.
